Domain Availability
/api/domains/availability
Check one domain and get registration status, confidence, events, and nameservers
Scrappa's Domain Availability API checks a domain name against the authoritative RDAP server for its top-level domain and returns a clear status, a confidence level, and for registered domains the registry events and nameservers. Input is forgiving: URLs are reduced to their host, names are lowercased, and internationalized names are converted to punycode. Scrappa is not affiliated with or endorsed by IANA, ICANN, or any domain registry.

Structured data for real applications. Here are some ideas.
Filter out taken domains before showing name ideas, so users only see candidates the registry has no record of.
Check a customer's desired domain during hosting or registrar signup before sending them to checkout.
Track registration and expiration dates for registered domains from the registry events in each response.
Enrich company records with domain registration age and authoritative nameservers.
Screen lists of candidate names across several TLDs with one request per domain and a machine-readable status for each.
Domain availability API
The Domain Availability API tells you whether a domain name is registered or probably available by querying the RDAP server listed for its TLD in the IANA bootstrap registry. It is built for name generators, hosting and registrar signup flows, brand research, and domain portfolio tools that need a fast, machine-readable answer instead of parsing WHOIS text. Boolean available and registered flags are null when the result is inconclusive, so an unknown result is never mistaken for a free name.
Get one of three statuses: registered, probably_available, or unknown.
Read the confidence level: high for registered, medium for probably_available, and low for unknown.
For registered domains, read registry events such as registration and expiration dates plus nameservers.
Send full URLs, mixed case, or Unicode names such as münchen.com and get the normalized ASCII domain back.
Pass the registrable name, for example brand.com, rather than a subdomain such as www.brand.com.
Test the domain availability API with 500 free monthly credits before scaling production traffic.
Call the endpoint with the name a user wants and branch on status. Treat probably_available as a strong signal, and confirm premium pricing, reserved names, and registrar rules with your registrar at checkout.

Usually, but not always. RDAP only shows that the registry has no record. Premium names, reserved names, names in a redemption or pending-delete period, and TLD-specific eligibility rules are checked by registrars at checkout.
The API looks up exactly the name you send, and registries only hold records for registrable domains, not for host names below them. Strip subdomains and check mybrand.com instead.
Some TLDs, including several country-code TLDs, do not publish an RDAP server. Those return status unknown with low confidence, and the source field is iana_rdap_bootstrap. Check those names with a registrar.
For registered domains, find the entry in rdap_events whose action is expiration. Not every registry publishes every event type.
Yes. Send the name in Unicode, for example münchen.com, URL-encoded in the query string. The response returns the punycode form, xn--mnchen-3ya.com, in the domain field.
No. RDAP is the structured, JSON-based successor to WHOIS that registries operate today. This API does not return registrant contact data.
Every Scrappa account includes 500 free credits each month. Each domain check is one request and costs one credit, which works out to $0.20 to $0.30 per 1,000 requests depending on the credit pack or plan.
